The U.S. Small Business Administration has released a 1-page form that makes it easier to apply for forgiveness of Paycheck Protection Program loans. The form also contains newly updated forms that comply with the latest stimulus law. 

Congress approved the COVID-19 relief package in the month of March that provided $284 billion of funding for small-scale businesses who needed loans. The money was intended to reduce the economic burden of the coronavirus epidemic. It also included a requirement that the SBA to issue simplified forms within 24 hours of the legislation being adopted to make the procedure of applying for forgiveness, along with conditions designed to facilitate more loans from community banks, particularly for minority-owned companies that struggled to get loans last year.

Ed Zollars, a partner with Thomas, Zollars & Lynch CPAs stated that the Small Business Administration fulfilled the requirement to publish the PPP form, which is one page long, for loan forgiveness within the first 24 hours of the date of the enactment of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 20,21. This was on the Current Federal Tax Developments blog of Kaplan Financial Education. “The agency also published additional updated forms.”

First Draw PPP Conditions for loan forgiveness

  • The levels of compensation and employee pay are kept at a constant level.
  • The proceeds from the loan may be used to pay payroll costs or other expenses that are eligible.
  • A minimum of 60% of profits are used to pay for payroll expenses

Second Draw PPP Loan Forgiveness The terms

Second Draw PPP loans granted to eligible borrowers qualify for complete loan forgiveness, if within the 8to 24-week duration following the loan’s disbursement

  • The First Draw PPP loan requires that the employee and compensation levels be maintained in the exactly the same manner.
  • The proceeds of the loan could be used to pay for the cost of payroll as well as other expenses that are eligible.
  • At least 60% of the profits are spent on payroll costs

Once all of the loan’s proceeds have been used The borrower may apply for forgiveness. Borrowers can request forgiveness at any time up to the date at which the loan matures. If borrowers do not apply for forgiveness within 10 months after the date of expiration of the time period that was covered and the loan is not renewed, PPP loan payments are not deferred any longer, and the borrower will be required to make loan payments to their PPP lender.
